Finally, the conception of how Geri Attrix was formed. Our story, and how two people made a conscious decision to post “music” on the web, and a major social media site. This is our story. Insert Law & Order Dun DUN…
The band was formed when Geri and I went on a cruise. Yup, instead of partying and getting burnt to a crisp, we came up with this idea.
the long story…
We were on our fourth day, third day, who f'ing knows of the cruise. Like the previous days, we would bounce around the ship, do our planned excursions, and play the group games which BTW, we won the music trivia contest! but the lady didn't give us the prize since we shared the answer's with another very nice couple. Okay, I digress. Every night we would hit up the piano bar/karaoke spot. Now mind you this wasn't real karaoke. Just a bunch of drunk passengers enjoying songs played to perfection and the all singing along. Or, whatever you would call it. LOL Like the other nights on board we headed to the piano bar. This was routine for this trip. Piano bar, comedy show, back to piano bar to close it out. But this one night was different. We noticed a sign that a “country western” band was playing in the very small bar where karaoke was normally the theme. When I say small, I mean really small. We hear what sounds like quite a big band playing and being country music isn't really our thing, we still owed it to ourselves to check it out. We open the door and SURPRISE! not another living soul in the room, except for a older couple sitting on the left, in the corner In front of a karaoke set up. Singing country music. Yup, no instruments, lights, nothing you would call a band. Talk about using a “click” track. I guess you know the next part, we waved very nicely and left. Back to the piano bar.
What happens next?
I will not lie. I was so violated. How could they? How could this cruise line pay for karaoke music and call it a “live” band? What the FU*#! That is also a very over dramatic reaction that really didn't happen. But the WTF's were said at least a half dozen times. Instead of sitting at the bar before the comedy show, we chose a table in a sort of out of the way spot in the bar. Geri, the level headed one, asked why would the cruise line pay for that? Knowing that back in the day I was part of a band. And yes, I wore spandex….. I very wisely came up with this answer. What little we did hear from the “band”, the female singer did have a really clear and nice singing voice. The gentleman also was good at singing the background. And that's when it hit us! At about the same time. We ordered another round and both aired our thoughts. Geri was totally into starting a band. I was a tad reluctant at first until a goal was set.
The Goal
Call it the alcohol talking, but the goal was a very easy goal after what we just witnessed. The goal of our band is to book gigs on cruise ships to cruise for free. Yup, there it was. At the time a decision made from to much rum and beer. An over abundance of decent food, and way to many desserts. the perfect storm of decision making was born. We have a goal. No entry into the rock hall. No gold, platinum records. no long tours to develop a drug habit. No groupies. No trashing hotel rooms. And the most important, no fame or money. Just simple originals, covers, and comedic originals and parodies to appeal to travelers to bring back their youth or just to sing along to. Easy, right?
The Name
What should have been quite easy to figure out. Now we are back home after the 7 days of cruising and not getting any sleep. The rest of the cruise was spent like most other days on the cruise. Eat, play, eat, see foreign lands, eat, watch comedians, and drink. Repeat. Still tired from the cruise we spit out out several names that we thought worked. But they were already bands. Then a simple act of just going to the mailbox solved the issue. A bill for me, flyer to resident, and the water bill. The name was right in front of us this entire time. Whether it be we didn't want to offend, or thought it was like all the others. But we said YES! Lets call ourselves, Geri Attrix…..After the lead singer.
